Earth Day

From Argentina to the Gulf of Gaeta for Earth Day

Recalling the annual appointment with World Earth Day, the AIPU Association for sustainable development based in Scauri and Sperlonga organizes an event through the story with images and videos of the research trip to Argentina from Patagonia to the Iberà National Park the second largest wetland on the planet after the Pantanal.
The theme of World Earth Day 2023 is investing in our planet, or investing in a "green" economy, respectful of the environment and its resources and this is the study and scientific research trip to various parts of Argentina by the biologist marino Adriano Madonna and by the architect Luigi Valerio.

The two scholars, who are not new to the Argentine territory and in particular to Patagonia, conducted a fast-paced journey taking two intercontinental flights and five internal flights, thus passing by Perito Moreno, the largest mobile glacier in the world, which, last February 28, they connected live with RaiUno, participating in the UnoMattina program on the other side of the world: Perito Moreno, in fact, is located on the border with Chile. From here, the two scholars headed towards the borders of Brazil, therefore they passed from the ice to an equatorial climate, conducting their research in the land of the ancient people of the Guarani, among exotic animals and alligators, with a leap towards the Yguazù waterfalls, the longest in the world, where the movie “Mission” was filmed. And again, the Valdes peninsula, in the boundless Patagonian steppes in the land of La Armonia, an estancia that is only visited by biologists who go to study life in this decidedly unique corner of the world, with penguins, sea lions, elephant seals, orcas and whales.
In each of the destinations reached, the architect Valerio and Professor Madonna studied the effects of climate change on the biodiversity of those places. Furthermore, they collected water samples which were sent to the Oceanographic Institute of San Diego, California, to verify the presence of microplastics in the world's waters (Micromar Project).
Precisely on these issues, the focal point to remember on this international event day, in reporting the synthesis of these extraordinary travel notes accompanied by videos and photographs, will become the theme of a meeting at the Gaeta Nautical Club on 29 April next. This is why we must act now, with courage and firmness, investing in innovation, it is the only way to protect our health and that of our planet, and to hope for a more equitable and prosperous future.
