Port of Gaeta

Outdoor lesson by the Caboto Foundation and Micromar

The Micromar project promotes contacts in the educational field, realizing the twinning between the Majorana Institute and the Fermi High School of Gaeta with an outdoor lesson at the Caboto Foundation with the collaboration of the A.I.P.U. and the boat trip in the waters of the Gulf of Gaeta.

The project, now in its second year, saw the participation of male and female students in the initiative for the protection of the Mediterranean Sea from pollution by microfibres and micro plastics.

The day was full of meetings and events that enriched the skills of our students.
The welcome was organized by the architect Luigi Valerio, president of the A.I.P.U., and by the staff of the Caboto Foundation.
Dr. Lino Sorabella, general services manager, presented the activities of the ITS (Higher Technical Institute, highly specialized post-diploma) Academy "Fondazione G. Caboto" illustrating the training needs not only of shipping, but of the entire economic sector which develops around the sea. This information meeting represented an excellent orientation teaching opportunity, which introduced the students to the world of work by offering the "sea sector"; it includes tourism, fishing, infrastructure development, aquaculture logistics and the entire naval sector.
The professor. Adriano Madonna, marine biologist and researcher/teacher at the "Federico II" University of Naples, assisted by Dr. Manuela Ruggeri, introduced the students to the problems of coastal zoning and the effects of hydrodynamics. The children were able to observe first-hand the consequences of human activity in the sea waters. This was possible with reports and graphs, provided to the students, which showed the levels of pollution from microfibres and micro plastics.

The activity that left the most indelible message of this educational trip was certainly the boat excursion to collect water samples for their subsequent analysis.
Group work was the founding core of the experience.
A moment of conviviality could not be missing, all together, with the tiella to remember the ancient flavors of tradition and not to forget the importance of knowing and respecting the places you visit.
The day experienced confirms how MicroMar is an experience that finds its maximum expression in internationalization and cooperation.
